The Advisor's List of who should and shouldn't win all of the college football awards.
Heisman Trophy
The Candidates are:
1. QB Tim Tebow, Florida
2. QB Chase Daniel, Missouri
3. RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas
4. QB Colt Brennan, Hawaii
Who should win: Tebow should win this award going away. To be honest I think Tebow is the only guy who has been consistently great week in and week out. Plus his numbers have been absolutely incredible.
My order would be: Tebow, Daniel, McFadden and Brennan
Who got dissed: West Virginia QB Pat White, LSU DT Glenn Dorsey and Central Florida RB Kevin Smith.
Maxwell Trophy- The Country's Most Outstanding Player
The Candidates are:
1. QB Tim Tebow, Florida
2. QB Dennis Dixon, Oregon
3. RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas
Who should win: Tebow should win this award also, but look out for McFadden because he is an upperclassman. I would also like to say that it is nice to see the Maxwell people reward Dixon on a great season, even though he was injured and had to sit out the last few games.
My order would be: Tebow, Dixon, and McFadden
Who got dissed: West Virginia QB Pat White, Hawaii QB Colt Brennan, Central Florida QB Kevin Smith.
Butkus Award- The Nation's Top Linebacker
The Candidates are:
1. Dan Connor, Penn State
2. Jordon Dizon, Colorado
3. James Laurinaitis, Ohio State
Who should win: If you are going off straight stats Connor should win this one in a landslide. However Laurinaitis has been the emotional leader of the #1 team in the country and also had a great season. Really I think there are several big time players missing here. Dizon had a good season, but making tackles five yards down the field isn't that impressive.
My order would be: Connor, Laurinaitis and Dizon
Who got dissed: Really I think there are several big time players missing here. Oklahoma's Curtis Lofton, Virginia Tech's Xavier Adibi and Illinois' J. Leman all had incredible seasons and deserved recognition.
Outland Award- The Nation's Top Interior Lineman
The Candidates are:
1. DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU
2. OT Anthony Collins, Kansas
3. OT Jake Long, Michigan
Who should win: Here's the deal, Dorsey was the most dominant player in college football this year. He should win every award he is up for. I do think that Long does have an outside chance.
My order would be: Dorsey, Long and Collins.
Who got dissed: Ohio State OT Kirk Barton and Boise State OT Ryan Clady.
Chuck Bednarik Award- The Nation's Top Defensive Player
The Candidates are:
1. LB Dan Connor, Penn State
2. DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU
3. LB James Laurinaitis, Ohio State
Who should win: Like I said before Dorsey should win every award he is up for. I mean this guy played injured for the last part of the year and still managed to get 11.5 sacks and 61 tackles on the season. Those numbers are ridiculous for a defensive tackle. Now I bet there is more than one voter who simply looks at stats when voting, which could give Connor a shot.
My order would be: Dorsey, Connor, Laurinaitis
Who got dissed: Virginia Tech LB Xavier Adibi, Oklahoma LB Curtis Lofton, Illinois LB J. Leman, and Virginia DE Chris Long.
Davey O'Brien Award- The Nation's Top Quarterback
The Candidates are:
1. Tim Tebow, Florida
2. Dennis Dixon, Oregon
3. Chase Daniel, Missouri
Who should win: Now if you are truly going to give this award to the better quarterback I think you go with Daniel. The Missouri gunslinger was great this season and put up some incredible passing numbers. Tebow was good, but not great passing the ball. I also think Daniel's 11-2 record should mean something.
My order would be: Daniel, Tebow and Dixon
Who got dissed: How can you give this award out and not mention Hawaii's Colt Brennan? I mean this guy set almost every career passing record imaginable this year and doesn't get even an invite. I think Boston College's Matt Ryan, West Virginia's Pat White and Oklahoma's Sam Bradford should also have complaints with the selection process.
Doak Walker Award- The Nation's Top Running Back
The Candidates are:
1. Mike Hart, Michigan
2. Darren McFadden, Arkansas
3. Ray Rice, Rutgers
Who should win: This award has to go to McFadden and it's not going to be close. I really think this award committee missed the boat on who should have been nominated this season.
My order would be: McFadden, Rice and Hart
Who got dissed: Central Florida's Kevin Smith is in some rarified air right now and the fact he didn't get a nomination for this award really says that this committee wasn't paying attention this season. I mean one of the most incredible records in college football is Barry Sanders single season record of 2,628 yards. Smith actually has a shot at this and will finish no worse than the number 2 rusher in NCAA history. I don't think a trip to Orlando is that much to ask. I also think Rashard Mendenhall from Illinois got the shaft.
Bilentikoff Award- The Nation's Top Receiver
The Candidates are:
1. Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech
2. Jordy Nelson, Kansas State
3. Mario Manningham, Michigan
Who should win: Crabtree's season was incredible, but in my mind I actually think what Nelson did is even more impressive. In the Red Raider's system someone is always going to have a monster year. Now Crabtree is still the best receiver I have ever seen at Tech, but I guarantee you no one thought Kansas State would have a player catch 122 balls. If Manningham wins this thing the award loses a lot of credibility.
My order would be: Nelson, Crabtree, Manningham.
Who got dissed: Louisville's WR Harry Douglas and Hawaii's Davone Bess
Thorpe Award- The Nation's Top Defensive Back
The Candidates are:
1. SS Craig Steltz, LSU
2. CB Antoine Cason, Arizona
3. SS Jaime Silva, Boston College
Who should win: I think Steltz is going to win this award, but Cason could give him a push.
My order would be: Steltz, Cason and Silva
Who got dissed: This is a tough one because there are a bunch of solid DBs this season. Wake Forest's Alphonso Smith led the country in ints and he scored 3 defensive tds. Missouri's William Moore was fantastic this season along with Kansas Aqib Talib. If I was going to give this award to someone I give it to Smith.
Mackey Award- The Nation's Top Tight End
The Candidate are:
1. Travis Beckum, Wisconsin
2. Martin Rucker, Missouri
3. Fred Davis, USC
Who should win: I think this is a two man race between Beckum and Rucker and while Rucker had a great season, Beckum was truly incredible at times. If you watched the Badger TE play this season, you saw a tight end that caught the ball and ran with it better than most receivers.
My order would be: Beckum, Rucker and Davis
Who got dissed: How about Oklahoma's Jermaine Gresham, who had more tds than any other tight end in the country?
Groza Award- The Nation's Top Place Kicker
The Candidates are:
1. Jose Martinez, UTEP
2. Thomas Weber, Arizona State
3. Austin Starr, Indiana
Who should win: Does anyone really care? I'm going to say Weber, because he seemed to have the best stats, going 2-2 beyond 50 yards.
My order would be: Weber, Starr and Martinez
Who got dissed: I'm sure there are other kickers out there that had great seasons, but I really don't care. Some may say that the Advisor forgets about guys who stepped up and made meaningful goals in tense situations. The skill/concentration demands on the kicker are huge, but the Advisor is unfortunately struck by the bias that exists in football. In golfing, it is "drive for show, putt for dough". In the military aviation it is "fighters make headlines, bombers make history." In college football, it is "a good kicker is only needed a few times each season."
Ray Guy Award- The Nation's Top Punter
The Candidate are:
1. Durant Brooks, Georgia Tech
2. Kevin Haber, Cincinnati
3. Brett Kern, Toledo
Who should win: Brooks, because I like his first name.
My order would be: Brooks, Haber and Kern
Who got dissed: Who else is there?
