The Advisor's Rant & Rave - November 27, 2007

Congratulations, you have found the #1 place on the internet to get all of your opinions on college football and for life in general. Follow these opinions and you will wow you friends, impress the opposite sex and even advance your career. Use these tidbits as your own and remember there is nothing more impressive than knowing a whole lot about college football.

RAVE- I love all of the coaching changes happening at big-time colleges this season. I'm telling you it will be a long time before you see programs like Nebraska, Michigan, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Georgia Tech changing coaches all at the same time. There is just so much high drama and intrigue when teams like these have to hire head coaches. In some of these states the college football coach at the state school is more recognizable than the Governor. The head football coach of a Michigan or a Nebraska carries a lot of pressure and it takes a special man to thrive in that environment. You never know who will become the next Bob Stoops or Pete Carrol and who will be a Mike Shula or Jon Cooper. It should at least make things interesting between bowl games this year.

RANT- Please explain to me why Texas A&M hired Mike Sherman as their head coach. What in the world makes the Aggies think this guy is going to be successful on the college level? He hasn't even been in the college environment for over 11 years. I mean did A&M not see what happens when pro football coaches come to the college ranks. Bill Callahan didn't work out at Nebraska, Dave Wannstedt is doing very poorly at Pittsburgh, Charlie Weis started out well at Notre Dame, but now look at him. Really the only truly successful pro coach that made the transition to college ball is USC's Pete Carroll. I think the Aggies should have thrown some real money at successful college coaches, like Boise State's Chris Peterson, Wake Forest's Jim Grobe or Illinois' Ron Zook. I just don't see Sherman competing with the Mack Browns and Bob Stoops of the world or for that matter the Mike Leachs.

RAVE- I love what Houston Nutt did last week. All season long I have been telling Arkansas fans, who were calling for Nutt's head, to be careful what they wished for. That the Hogs had themselves a very good coach that is better than anyone else they could get into Fayetteville.  But, they did not heed my warnings. Week after week complaining that this Razorback team was not living up to its potential and that it was all Nutt's fault. Well I know hindsight is 20/20, but do you guys still feel that way? After all this team did finish 8-4 and only 5 points away from winning the SEC West. Oh yeah, those Hogs also beat the #1 team in the country last week. Look, Nutt may not be the best coach in the world, but Arkansas is not likely to attract a Urban Meyer or a Pete Carrol. Nutt always had his teams competitive and every now and then Arkansas would come up with a really good season. With Nutt going to Mississippi, I'm not sure who will end up at UA, but I have a feeling it will be a step down from the former head man.

RANT- If there was ever a season where there needed to be a playoff this is it. I'm sorry but if Ohio State plays West Virginia for the BCS Title the entire nation should go on a hunger strike until things change. Nothing against the Buckeyes or the Mountaineers, but this should show college football fans the real problem with the BCS. Teams with easier schedules have a huge advantage. This season teams from the Pac-10, SEC and Big 12 are paying a heavy price because their conferences are so strong. If you compare the Big East and the Big 10 to the above conferences you see what I'm talking about. Now I do think West Virginia and Ohio State are solid teams, but they shouldn't get a pass to the National Title game because they beat Cincinnati and Michigan respectively.

RAVE- How about Baylor talking Houston's head man, Art Briles, to be their next head coach. This is a big time hire for the Bears and a move that Briles could regret in a few years. I mean did he not see what Guy Morriss ran into in Waco? You have to compete against 5 solid programs in the Big 12 South with Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and they are all going after the same players in the same region. Even if Baylor became a decent team they could still be the 6th best team in their division. I know Briles is going to make a lot of money, but I think if he waited around and kept things going down in Houston he would have gotten a similar paycheck from a job he could really succeed at. Now with that being said, if Briles does turn things around for the Bears he might be able to name his job in the future.

RANT- This rant is for all of the e-mails I got for having Missouri in my Top 10 starting on September 24th. I was told I didn't know what I was talking about and how I was leaving out Alabama, Clemson and Wisconsin. I was called a jackass by several individuals and that I should stop writing about college football. Well, who's the jackass now? The Tigers are the #1 team in the country and if they win this week against Oklahoma, will be playing for the National Title.

RAVE-  I have been writing all season that Hawaii was overrated and that the Warriors would get their comeuppance against Bosie State last week. Well the Advisor knows how to dish it out and he also knows how to eat crow. Congrats to head coach June Jones, QB Colt Brennan and the rest of the Hawaii football team. You guys are for real and after seeing what you did against the Broncos I'm sure no BCS team wants to take you guys on. I do have one question though. Do you think the Fiesta Bowl will let you guys play in Hawaii?
